Summer 2022 - Week 4

WHAT’S IN THE BOX:
carrots
lettuce
green onions
garlic
zucchini
kale (lacinato or curly)
beets or chard
dill or cilantro
cabbage (small shares only)
kohlrabi (large shares only)

ELABORATIONS:
Lettuce: If you are feeling overwhelmed by lettuce, try these ideas: (The French crisp type is especially well suited for these.) Use instead of bread for a sandwich. Use instead of a bun for hamburgers and hot dogs, Make tuna boats. Use as a tortilla for burritos/tacos. I did a bread-free stint last summer and was surprisingly pleased and satisfied with the substitution.
Herbs: Basil and parsley will be back next week. If you got basil last week, you’ll get parsley (and vice versa).
Kohlrabi: It’s the spaceship looking thing in your box. The slugs had a nibble-fest back when it was so rainy and left scarring on the skin. (Darn slugs!) We try our best to only give out beautiful “A” grade produce to you folks, but in this case it’s either ugly or nothin’. There is more on the horizon for the small shares in the next week or two. As for what the heck to do with it…it is crunchy like an apple, slightly sweet, and has a very mild cabbage-like flavor. The outer skin is quite fibrous, so you should peel before eating. I personally prefer it raw and eat it as a snack, or as a palate cleanser with our dinner. You can also cook it as you would a turnip.

BARTER BOX:
I finally remembered to send a barter box to all the pick-up sites. Not everyone likes everything, so feel free to use the barter box to swap out things you don’t like, for things you do. Hate beets? Put them in the barter box and take some kale. Please only take from the box if you have added to it. It is for swapping, not bonus goodies. If you pick up your share at market, please use the barter box rather than the market stand for swap outs.

ON THE FARM:
We spent the last 2 weeks pecking away at the garlic harvest and it is a huge relief to cross that task off the list. We had around 1300 row ft of garlic to pull, clean, bundle, and hang. (See pics below) We had to work around harvest, freak rain showers, and rescue-mission type weeding projects.
In general, we are spending A LOT of time weeding. It can be a little stressful walking around the fields seeing all the crops that need our attention ASAP.

That’s all for this week. Enjoy your veggies!
