That rain last week was lovely! The farm felt fresh and clean for a hot minute. But alas, smoke from the California fires is drifting in. So far it isn’t too bothersome. At least we get to enjoy another week of sunshine. Any sunny day after September 30th is a bonus in my book.
This dry stretch will be mad scramble to get the fall crops in. Currently we have one team digging potatoes with our old dinosaur of a potato digger (see photo), and the other team hauling in the winter squash. We are hoping to also get garlic planted and cover crop in before the rains return. It is a tall order to pull all of that off in a week, but we will try.
WHAT’S IN THE BOX:
orange carrots
purple carrots
yellow finn potatoes
red cabbage
leeks
sweet pepper
spaghetti squash
chard
onions
romaine lettuce
ELABORATIONS:
Purple carrots: These are better cooked than raw in my opinion. The flavor and sweetness really shine in cooked form.
Leeks: They are in the onions family and can be used virtually anywhere/anyway you’d use an onion. They definitely have a more pronounced flavor. Dirt tends to fall down between the layers in a leek as it grows, so let me tell you the trick to getting them clean. Cut off the root end and the top end of the leek ( you can keep a few inches of the dark green part.) Cut the leek in half lengthwise and fan the halves under cold running water. Potato leek soup is always a winner. You’ll find that recipe and more that feature leeks here.
Spaghetti squash: This is a fun one. The flavor is pretty mild and is best used in lieu of pasta. Bake or steam the squash until the flesh is fork tender. Drag a fork across the squash to rake out the string-like flesh. Serve with your favorite pasta sauce or pesto.
That’s all I have time for today. I gotta get back out there!
