CSA Newsletter - Week 3 - 2020
The calendar may say July, but if I didn’t know better I’d think it was early April. We are all back to bundling up in our winter woolens and trying desperately to fight off the urge to curl up and nap somewhere warm. It is hard to accept the cool and gray once we’ve had a taste of true summer weather. Such is life in the Pacific NW. Supposedly the sun and warmth will return next week.
WHAT’S IN THE BOX:
carrots
green onions
fresh garlic
new potatoes-Amorosa
broccoli
zucchini
beets or chard
dill or cilantro
shell, snap, or snow peas
lettuce
VEGGIE NOTES:
Amorosa new potato-This is a delicious fingerling with a dense waxy flesh. The skin is thin and delicate. Enjoy steamed, oven roasted, or in potato salad.
Fresh garlic-This variety is called “music” and is potent stuff. The cloves are big and easy to peel. No need to refrigerate. Whatever you don’t use right away will cure on your counter.
Broccoli-We had quit growing early summer broccoli a few years ago due to pests and space in the crop rotation, but I got a wild hair and did a bonus planting. I tend to express my spontaneity with rogue plantings.
Everything else in the box should be familiar.
Ever wonder what the farm looks like? One’s of Jim’s friends came out yesterday with his drone and took a bunch of pictures and videos of the farm. We wanted him to get some pictures of the blue heron nest that is up in the tree tops just beyond one of our fields. (Don’t worry, he kept a polite distance.) We can hear the babies squawking all day while the parents come and go bringing snacks. It’s pretty cool to witness. We will get the pictures soon, but meanwhile here is a nice shot of the farm. We utilize roughly 15 acres.
That’s about it for today. The clouds are making me sleepy. I need to get back outside and weed something. Have a great week, stay well, and wear your mask!
