CSA Newsletter - Week 18
THIS IS THE LAST WEEK OF THE SUMMER CSA.
STORAGE SHARES ARE BEING DELIVERED THIS WEEK
In a blink of an eye another summer season has come and gone. I think this one blew by the fastest. If I just thought about the weather and general growing conditions, this summer was divine; hot enough to feel like we actually had a summer, rainy enough to keep irrigation stress at bay, yet dry enough in spring and fall to allow for both early and regular plantings of crops and the ability to plant garlic and cover crop and get all the fall harvest done. But if I think about all the other craziness going on it the world, I am a confused mess; happy, sad, scared, hopeful, stressed, resigned. I feel like a magic 8 ball of emotions. Shake me up and see what registers in that little window…. I think that is what made this season such a blur.
Jim and I want to thank you, dear members, for joining us on this wild journey. The future seemed especially uncertain in the spring so we are grateful that you put faith in us to be your farmers and help provide you with nourishment and deliciousness all summer long.
Though our Fall shares are full at this time, we will still be at the Olympia and Proctor farmers market year round (as long as we still have veggies!) If you still wish to avoid the crowds at market, we do have an online store which will allow you to shop online and pick up at the farm or behind our stall at either market, so you don’t even have to come inside the market itself. Both options are minimal contact and very socially distant.
CSA 2021
We will open up registration for the 2021 CSA in mid January. I’ll send out a reminder email at that time.
RETURNING EMPTY BOXES:
WEDNESDAY FOLKS: Please return your boxes to your pick up site by next Tuesday OR drop them off at the Olympia Farmers Market anytime we are there.
MARKET FOLKS: Bring them back anytime.
WHAT’S IN THE BOX:
carrots-orange and purple
beets
leeks
onions
shallots
potatoes-hucklberry gold
delicata
butternut
lacinato or curly kale
dill or Italian parsley
romanesco-large shares only
ELABORATIONS:
Huckleberry gold potatoes-They are yellow on the inside and are very similar to Yukon gold and Yellow Finn. They are incredibly versatile and can be baked, fried, mashed, roasted, grilled, or used to make potato leek soup.
Romanesco-We didn’t grow this for the CSA per se, but we had a big flush come on all at once. We only had enough for the large shares, however. It is very similar to cauliflower and broccoli. Prepare it any way you would prepare those. Be sure to take a moment to gaze upon its beauty and geometry. When I see things like this, I am reminded yet again that this earth is freaking amazing!
Thank you again for supporting our farm this summer! We wish you all a happy healthy fall and winter. Vote. Wear a mask. Support your community however you can. Be a good human!
