VEGGIE ID:
It was a mighty challenge to close these boxes today. Thank goodness I forgot to put cabbage on the harvest list and the lettuce wasn’t quite ready. I think we would have just thrown our hands up in defeat.
Onions: You will surely notice that we have moved on from the mild, sweet yellow onion. Sweets don’t store very long due to high sugar content, so we are transitioning to storage onions that are stronger in flavor and will most certainly set your eyes to watering. They are delicious!
Sweet peppers: We have a devil of a time getting bell peppers to turn color in this climate. We just don’t have the heat units to pull it off. We did, however discover 2 varieties of bullhorn peppers that do turn red and orange and are sweet as can be.
Kale is back in the game. You should have gotten either curly or red Russian.
Everything else should be familiar by now.
FIELD REPORT:
This time of year always feels like a contradiction. The days are getting shorter, but the weather feels like high summer. There seems to be more veggies than ever to harvest (and eat), but the fields are looking more and more empty as we till in expired crops and haul in astounding quantities of onions for curing. There is a little less field work to do, but crew members drop off bit by bit as college classes resume, last chance travel plans emerge, and winter jobs start up so on balance, the work load feels the same (sometimes more.) Leaves are starting to turn and mornings are getting foggy and I am already feeling sad about the seasonal change. I want to cling to summer as long as I can.
We are currently on week 13 of the Main Summer Season and week 6 of the Height of the Season share. Height of the Season folks have 2 more deliveries after this week. If you want to continue receiving yummy produce for the rest of the Main Summer Season (an additional 3 weeks), let me know and I can sign you up.
CSA BALANCE: We ask that your CSA balance be paid in full by September 1st (unless we have made other arrangements.) If you have questions about your balance or need to stretch payments out a little longer, send me an email and propose a plan.
Enjoy your veggies and these last days of sun and summer!
