CSA Newsletter - Week 6 - July 17, 2017

summer 6 2019.jpg

I hope you’re hungry. Despite the fact that it is drab and drizzly outside, this week’s box is brimming with summer vibes. The heat wave that is currently engulfing the rest of the country has chosen to ignore this little corner of the world, although I think we might get a taste of it this weekend. It’s perfect timing really. We can work in the cool weather and enjoy the heat in our “off” time. I am a little worried about how huge the summer squash will be come Monday. We pick 3 times a week and still end up with lunkers. Should be interesting….

WHAT’S IN THE BOX:
carrots
lettuce
sweet onions
garlic
potatoes-French fingerling
fennel
kohlrabi
green beans
zucchini
crookneck squash
chard, beets, or kale
rosemary, parsley, cilantro, dill (2 of the 4)
sungold cherry tomatoes- Farm and Thurs market pick up only

VEGGIE ID:
There a several new items this week which is pretty exciting.
Sweet onions: We have finally graduated from scallions and can offer the real deal. This variety is called Zoey and is sweet(ish). It’s not quite as sweet as a Walla Walla, but it won’t make you cry and is very tasty cooked or raw.
French fingerling potatoes: This is another one of our favorites. The texture is similar to Russian banana and the skin is amazing. It is so thin and delicate. It makes a wonderful oven roasted potato.
Green Beans: Peas are out and beans are in. Just like that. We anticipate having A LOT of beans here in the next few weeks with the weather warming up. Time to start Googling recipes! These are stringless so all you have to do is snap off the tops and tips and they are ready to go.
Sungold Cherry tomatoes: They are just starting to trickle in so we will rotate them around the pick up sites.

CANNING/FREEZING/PICKLING: As mentioned above, we anticipate having a lot of beans coming down the pike, so if you would like to buy extra to freeze or can, let me know. We will also have pickling cucumber starting next week. Eventually bulk basil and tomatoes will be ready. Check out our bulk veggie page for pricing. I can leave your order with your CSA share or you can come to the Olympia or Tacoma Farmers Market to pick it up.
