Late Fall Share- Week 4-December 13, 2014

by jennifer on December 14, 2014

This is the last delivery for the late fall share.

Thank you for joining us for these last 4 weeks. We appreciate your continued commitment to our farm. It is always a bit of a gamble to commit to weekly boxes this late into the season. One never knows what the weather will do. Floods and freezes are the main worry. We did experience some seriously cold temperatures that really did a number on the kale and the would-be lettuce and herbs. Luckily the carrots and other roots seem to thrive despite the cold. And we had abundant stores of squash, potatoes, and onions in storage. Let us all thank Isaac, Alex, Ian, and Maryclair for sticking around late in the season to help us harvest all these tasty veggies.

We loaded you with up with a bunch of roots this week. Remember they will store in your fridge for weeks. Remember too, that many root veggies can be incorporated into desserts. It might be time for a chocolate beet cake, parsnip breakfast muffins, carrot cake, Cinderella muffins, pumpkin cheesecake, etc. All these recipes are on our website. This is kind of late in the season, but I just came across an awesome tutorial about how to peel, chop, and slice any number of veggies (including celeriac!) Check out this link.

Starting January 1st, you can sign up online for next season’s CSA and we hope you do! At this point, all the pick-up days and locations are the same. Consider giving a share (or partial payment for a share) to a loved one as a holiday gift.

HOLIDAY GIFTS: What do you give to the one who has everything? Food! We all need to eat, right? You could give a CSA share as mentioned above or create your own basket of storage veggies. We have a nice assortment of dry beans that would make great stocking stuffers. We also have re-usable shopping bags (bigger ones than the first batch) and farm t-shirts with our river man logo. I am also working on a gift certificate to spend at any one of our market stands in $10, $20, and $50 increments. I hope to have that done this week. All of this can be ordered through our website. Visit our Gift and Merchandise page.

Jim and I wish you all a fabulous holiday season full of good food, and quality time with friends, family, and community.

See you next year!
Jen & Jim
